Straining vocals? Neck in a knot?
This is the curse of the singer or the singing teacher! Get to the real shape of the ball!
How to get real PERMANENT change to your pure vocal-ism?
What’s the REAL cause of muscle tension restricting your voice!
…you’re are halfway through the day and you’re forcing your voice because it just won’t hit the high notes.
…or you’re dreading rehearsals because your neck and/or shoulders are so tight.
These can become the last straw that break that singer’s resolve!
Regular strategies singers employ to sort throat tension or tight shoulders are…
-Hot showers while circling and rubbing the shoulders;
-Exercise and stretching.
-Upper body and facial massages often.
-Gadgets and gizmos, letting electric power do the work. E.g. heating pads, massage chairs…home-style DIY!
-Rolling a painful upper spine around a tennis ball while leaning against a wall!
-Ibuprofen/painkillers. Most of us are a bit wary of the side effects of this method.
-For a novel idea, form a circle with singer friends and massage each other’s sore spots. Multi-tasking at best!
– releasing tension while freeing the vocals AND socializing too. Heaven on wheels!
These methods keep you going in themselves, they do a temporary job.
But are they the permanent solution? Do they get to the core fault?
Simply no! The base cause is never addressed; never explored; never really understood.
Is it possible then that ‘you just might be doing something to yourself? You might be your own cause!
I’ve got news for you! Good news.
That is exactly the possibility that is happening in most cases.
Such is the case with the young lady who came to find out her how to sort her neck tension.
She came on a Friday afternoon after a heavy week of work and study. When she came to a high note her voice was just not strong. She was putting her everything into getting there, so why was she not lifting the roof off?
The three vital points so often overlooked are that can make all the difference!
- The delicate balance of the head on the spine is so easily disrupted. This causes a tightness in the whole torso.
- The jaw is hinged in such a way that the only way open is down. It never opens upwards.
- Once the jaw is misused, the balance of the head on the spine is unnaturally dropping back and down. The domino effect is direct body stress in the and tightness to the vocal instrument. This constricts to make the sound tight or weak!
To see the surprise on my singers face was pure bliss; as she effortlessly sang out after coming to grips with the idea and releasing her head/neck/jaw organisation.
